What
is Radon?
Radon is an invisible and odorless gas that comes from
deposits of uranium naturally deposited in soil, rock,
and water. It disperses harmlessly outdoors, but can
threaten human health when it accumulates in buildings.
Radon is a radioactive decay product of radium, which
in turn is a decay product of uranium. Both uranium
and radium are common
elements in soil.
Where is Radon found?
The primary source of high levels
of radon in homes is the soil. EPA estimates that
one in 15 homes
across the United States may have elevated levels
of radon. No area of the country is free from risk.
In some areas of the country, as many as one out
of two homes has high levels. Radon seeps through
cracks in foundation floors or walls, hollow-block
walls,
windows doors, and
openings around floor drains, pipes and sump pumps.
